FAQ
- How do I install Stare?
- Download Stare from the Mac App Store. On first launch, Stare will ask for camera permission and walk you through enabling its system extension in System Settings → Privacy & Security. The whole setup takes about a minute.
- Stare doesn't appear in Zoom / Meet / Teams
- Quit and re-open the video app. macOS only refreshes its list of available cameras when an app launches. If Stare still does not appear, restart your Mac so the system camera registry refreshes.
- macOS keeps asking me for camera permission
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera and confirm Stare is enabled. If the toggle is on but the prompt keeps appearing, toggle it off, restart Stare, then toggle it back on.
- Performance feels slow or choppy
- Stare is built for Apple Silicon and uses the Neural Engine. On Intel Macs, performance will be considerably worse and is not supported. On Apple Silicon, if you see hitching, try lowering the intensity preset to "Subtle" or "Off" temporarily and email us with the model of your Mac and your macOS version.
- How do I uninstall Stare?
- Drag the Stare app from /Applications to the Trash. macOS will offer to remove the system extension at the same time. If it does not, run "systemextensionsctl uninstall <team-id> com.stare.StareCameraExtension" in Terminal — instructions for finding your team ID are in the README.
